At the market the grass floor isles are wide enough for you to walk your bike with attached child trailer; there's peas that were picked that morning (!); there's young urban farmers who've made incredible sacrifices to bring you that morning's basil. It is an outdoor shopping experience like no other; there's so little packaging it seems surreal; oh, and the opportunities to learn new recipes, not in book form, just good old fashioned word-of-mouth.
There's so much room for your inner child's creativity to be let loose; whether it's your chance to use that large straw basket you bought years ago on your travels, or the way you have to mastermind packing your large backpack, heavy gourds first, several layers of greens next, then some bread and cheese at the top, individually, and double wrapped so one doesn't get soggy and the other doesn't leak. There's planning, but it's not inconvenient, it's ritual-like, and you love it, come on, admit it, it's very special, isn't it?!
The qualities and benefits of eating fresh, local, slow-made food are endless: you become intrinsically connected to the soil where your potatoes were harvested; you become friendly with farmer families; you get to thank the person who seeded, sowed, and watched the winds change, and felt the rain growing in the clouds; at a farmers' market you have the unique opportunity to participate in the story of your food. Here at Fairmount Park Farmers' Market is your weekly opportunity to slow life down, re-charge, eat better, and connect with one of life's most important, most beautiful and life-transforming acts. Bon appetit!
