This week I was hoping to make a final batch of my rhubarb juice for my shop. I called up the farm that I get my rhubarb from, with fingers crossed, that there might be a few stragglers left. "Rhubarb season is over" was the expected answer. I was a bit disgruntled to have to say goodbye to rhubarb but this didn't last long as I excitedly started to plan for cherries, sweet peas, fresh radish, new beets and more!
Many of Canadians say that they could never live somewhere warm all year long. As a matter of fact, I hear this very often. Why? Because they would miss the Canadian seasons. Missing seasonal food is rarely a reason :) The convenience of grocery stores and southern Californian food flown to us has left us without that same nostalgia for Ontario seasonal food. Do we miss strawberries when they are out of season? Can we hold off long enough from eating sweet peas to really, truly celebrate them when they burst from Ontario soil? Can we joyously crunch into that first sweet corn in August - and then eat it everyday till it's gone and freeze it for the winter? Maybe. Our family does this for a few key crops and I have to say the day that first batch of strawberries, rhubarb, corn or peas come in - we have never tasted anything better !
Come to the market, chat with the farmers to find out what the next crop will be next and get ready to celebrate it!
