For farmers' this was traditionally the mid-point between planting and harvesting season. Based on a recent conversation with Wheelbarrow Farm it seems quite true. With a huge smile, he reported that all the summer crops had been planted and after they finish some weeding (yes by hand with hoes) , they are officially in growing/harvesting season. We are on the cusp of some seriously good - local food coming our way! Last night, on the phone with another farm I was giddy with excitement as he mentioned new zucchinis with the flowers intact and another farm mentioned cherries are on their way! Another reason to celebrate.
June 24th, has also traditionally been a time of midsummer festivals in Europe –– originally Pagan and later assumed as religious holidays marked by saints such as St. Jean the Baptiste Day. Celebrations would include bonfires, feasts, performances and music.
This week at the market we celebrate midsummer day, summer solstice, St. Jean the Baptist Day with a bonfire from 5:00-7:00. Bring your marshmallows, sticks, ukuleles and campfire songs!
