Special Guest: Harry Stoddart and Stoddart Farm CSA
Not every CSA farmer gets a shout out from Michael Pollan, but Harry Stoddart has garnered that kind of attention thanks to his compelling new work, Real Dirt – An Ex-Industrial Farmer’s Guide to Sustainable Eating (Iguana Books, 2013).
Harry's book is a rousing meditation on his journey from conventional feedlot farmer to certified organic production—and then his move beyond to what he calls truly sustainable agriculture. In his book, he delves into the science and reveals major problems of the food industry. His assertions rankle. “All of our current production and consumption systems have serious flaws.” Harry also claims he harmed the environment more in his early years as an organic farmer than when he farmed conventionally. Over time he has experimented with new methods. For example to reduce soil erosion, he writes: "I was one of the first certified organic farmers in Canada to experiment with organic no-till production."
Ultimately, and most powerfully though, Harry places his hope with us—consumers. “An informed eater can accomplish what no politician would dare attempt.” He talks of using the tools of capitalism in subversive ways, writing, "We have a vote with our dollars every day. When it comes to food, we have a vote three times a day."
After reading Real Dirt, Michael Pollan fired off this note: “Harry: I read your book on the way home and just wanted to tell you how fine I thought it was. You completely ignore every orthodoxy, which allows you to speak about both with unusual credibility.”
If you haven’t had the chance to visit a CSA farm, or this one in particular, the Fairmount Park Farmers’ Market is bringing the farmers to you. Here’s your chance to talk and explore:
- Want to support a CSA? Purchase humanely raised and 100% pastured meats and poultry. The farm also produces eggs.
- Thinking of making a larger commitment? Ask about the farm’s Winter Share program.
- Love knitting? Ask about the farm’s popular “Wool Share” program, where customers can receive skeins of hand-painted yarns from local flocks.
- Want to discuss farming methods, GMO’s and sustainability? Here’s your chance. Copies of Harry's book will also be available for sale.
For more info, see the farm’s website. We hope to see you there.
Our producers are busy making cheese, honey, preserves and baking that bread!
